Trending Topics-  Clarification/FAQs Regarding the Regulations Announcement on August 26, 2021 at 10:00am Beijing Time
We wanted to take the opportunity to clarify some questions and concerns regarding our recent announcement. Please see the following:
  1. At this time, all classes between August 27 and 31 Beijing Time will be canceled regardless of where the student is located. After August 31 Beijing Time, we will work with those located outside of Mainland China directly.
  2. Technical Issue- some classes are still being booked for August 27-31 Beijing Time and on the weekends. This appears to be a technical error where some parents are still able to book classes during time frames not allowed by the education regulations. If you still have classes on your schedule between August 27 and 31, these classes will be canceled as soon as possible and will be treated as student cancellations outside of 24 hours (Student No Show 24H). Our team is working to resolve this technical error and we apologize for any confusion or frustration this has caused.

Regulation Update on August 25, 2021 at 9:00pm Beijing Time
Dear Teachers,

We are writing to provide the teacher community with an important update regarding China’s new education regulations.

As of August 25, 2021, VIPKid was informed of the following required changes:
  • Classes can no longer take place during the summer holiday. This means that all classes from August 27 to August 31 (Beijing Time) will be canceled. All impacted classes will be removed from your schedule at midnight on August 26 (Beijing Time). These classes will be treated as student cancellations outside of 24 hours (Student No Show 24H). Additionally, to confirm, these classes will not count towards a teacher’s maximum number of canceled classes allowed within a contract period.
  • As of September 1, classes can resume from Mondays to Fridays (Beijing Time). Classes will no longer be able to take place during the weekend. If you currently have classes scheduled on Saturday or Sunday after September 1, these classes will be removed from your schedule. All currently booked classes on weekdays on and after September 1 will not be impacted. You will also be able to open slots and receive new bookings on weekdays on and after September 1.
All parents will be informed of these changes from their child’s Learning Partner (LP) before August 27 (Beijing Time). Please note that your students outside of Mainland China are not impacted by these regulations and we will work with them directly.

We are incredibly disheartened to share this news, as we had been optimistic that students would be able to continue taking classes during holidays and weekends on the VIPKid platform.

We want to acknowledge that we wholeheartedly recognize this update may significantly impact the livelihoods of many in the community and your loved ones at home. Please know that VIPKid is doing everything we can to support teachers in the community and we are continuing our efforts to provide additional opportunities for teachers to succeed on the VIPKid platform. Your continued and future success is top of mind for VIPKid and VIPKid will continue to work to make this success a reality.

It is our promise to continue to update the teacher community on VIPKid’s plans and next steps. This landing page will continue to include all communication updates with a timestamp for tracking and transparency.

As always, if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to contact us directly by sending a support ticket.
Trending Topics-  Recent Updates and FAQs Regarding the Regulations on August 24, 2021 at 11:00am Beijing Time
We wanted to provide the teacher community with a few reminders and announcements regarding the regulations.

We understand that some ESL companies are sharing their own updates and parents may have different information regarding the regulations, but please note that this page will always include all of the official information for VIPKid specifically. We emphasize this because other ESL companies' policies may differ from VIPKid and web articles may not be official sources of correct information.

To answer some other trending topics that we have seen in the community, we want to confirm that VIPKid courses with foreign teachers are allowed to take place on weekends and/or holidays at this time. VIPKid recently sent an announcement to all teachers in the Starlight (Group) Course program for which classes will only take place during the weekdays starting September 1. However, to confirm, Major Course and other certifications will continue on the weekends at this time. If there are any changes to this policy, we will let teachers know.

Additionally, on August 21, VIPKid invited a small number of randomly selected teachers to participate in a program to record on-demand Major Course classes for students on the platform. Teachers invited to this program were contacted directly via email. Please note that we are exploring this option as a result of the recent education regulations in China. While live courses are not impacted at this time and remain the preference for our students and families, in the event of regulations impacting Major Courses in the future, we hope to provide parents the ability to take on-demand recorded classes with VIPKid teachers.

As always, if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to contact us directly by sending a support ticket. Additionally, FAQs regarding regulation updates can be found here.

Regulation Update on August 7, 2021 at 10:00am Beijing Time
Dear teachers,

We are writing to provide the teacher community with an important update regarding China’s new education regulations.

These regulations have taken time to fully understand and VIPKid has been working all hours to explore different business avenues that could minimize the impact of the regulations on the lives of teachers, students, parents, and our staff in China and the US.

First and foremost, let us be clear that we are confident that VIPKid’s business will remain operational. The business, however, will look different than it has to date. We want to take this opportunity to share our plan for moving forward as we navigate this new era of online education.

Short-Term Impact

On August 6, 2021, VIPKid was informed of the required changes to our business. Specifically:
  • Students in China who have already purchased class packages will be able to finish their courses with foreign VIPKid teachers on the platform. This is good news because many parents have purchased classes several months in advance. VIPKid teachers can still count on work for several months with students in China who have already purchased packages.
  • Starting August 7, 2021, students in China will be unable to purchase new class packages with foreign VIPKid teachers outside of China. To clarify, this means that students in China will only be able to take the remaining classes that they have already purchased. VIPKid will be unable to sell products offering lessons with foreign teachers outside of China to students in China.
  • Students outside of China can continue purchasing and/or renewing their classes with foreign teachers. In addition, international course offerings can continue as normal. VIPKid will be investing in the expansion of these offerings so that teachers can continue and grow their opportunities on the platform. Students in other countries will continue to be able to take classes with foreign teachers.
We are incredibly disappointed to have to share this news, as until today, we had been hopeful there would be minimal impact to teachers. We recognize that many of you may be feeling upset, confused and frustrated about these changes and wondering, what does the future look like for VIPKid and teachers on the VIPKid platform? We understand that this change will not only impact the special connections you’ve formed with your students, but also the livelihoods of you and your loved ones at home.

As we previously shared, VIPKid’s top priority is for all teachers to continue teaching on our platform, so that together, we can continue in our mission to inspire and empower every child for the future. While this new future will look different than the one-to-one English lessons you have been teaching to students in China, we are committed to seeing our mission through and offering opportunities for teachers to succeed on the VIPKid platform.

In the short term, we feel confident that the booking rate will remain similar over the next few months as students schedule classes for which they’ve already paid. Beyond that, we want to be clear about our long term plans for VIPKid.

Long-Term Vision

You may have noticed that VIPKid has been piloting several programs globally over the past year. These international product lines, reading programs for US students and Adult Courses are not impacted by the regulations. VIPKid also continues to invest in markets outside of China. We expect these teaching opportunities to grow in the coming months. With these programs and expansion into new markets, subjects and areas (for example, English Speaking for Adults, Math, Science, Art), it is our intention to minimize the impact to teachers.

With the above in mind, we want to ease your concerns and make the following points clear:
  • Bookings: Teachers will continue to be booked for classes that were already purchased. Booked trials on your schedule will also continue to take place.
  • Payments: As always, teachers will continue to be paid as scheduled.
  • Contracts: Contracts will continue to be renewed. In addition, we will continue to recruit new teachers and our referral program will continue as we anticipate growth in new areas of the business.
  • Relationships With Your Students: We also recognize that teachers may not know how many classes they have left with their students in China. Your connections with students mean the world to VIPKid and we will create a solution and plan for teachers to be able to properly say goodbye to their parents and students in China when the time comes. Please stay tuned for more updates here.
It is our promise to continue to update the teacher community on VIPKid’s plans and next steps. This landing page will continue to include all communication updates with a timestamp for tracking and transparency.

We say it time and again, but the teacher community is truly an essential part of the global classroom we are collectively building. VIPKid’s success is directly due to your daily contributions and we are so grateful for your talents, expertise, and dedication. Together, we know that we can unite to overcome the challenges along the way. Thank you to the entire teacher community.
Regulation Update on August 5, 2021 at 9:00pm Beijing Time
Dear teachers,

We are writing to provide an update regarding the recent announcements made regarding education regulations.

Although other ESL companies have made announcements to teachers on their platforms, our team is still working to understand implementation timelines and details so we can best communicate how these new regulations will impact the future of teachers on the VIPKid platform.

Unlike some other ESL companies that have announced business decisions regarding their platforms, as one of the largest ESL companies with global users, including many varied product lines and global services, VIPKid is confident that our business will remain operational.

VIPKid’s top priority is for all teachers to continue teaching on our platform, so that together, we can continue in our mission to inspire and empower every child for the future. While this new future may look a little different, we are committed to seeing this through and offering our support to all teachers on the VIPKid platform.

We plan to be in touch as soon as we have more details pertaining to the platform that will affect our beloved teacher community. In the meantime, we promise the following:
  1. Regular Communication and Transparency: We will continue to keep you all informed on what we learn and how regulations may impact teachers. To help, we’ve created this landing page, which will include all communication updates with a timestamp for tracking and transparency.
  2. Payments sent on time: As always, teachers will continue to be paid as scheduled.
  3. More global class offerings: We will continue to work to expand our student population and our VIPKid services globally so that teachers continue to have success and opportunities on our platform.
Thank you for your patience and continued support and we will be in touch with more information as soon as possible.
Regulation Update on July 27, 2021 at 9:00pm Beijing Time
Dear teachers,

As you may have heard, the Ministry of Education in China recently announced new regulations for after-school tutoring businesses in China. If you would like to review these regulations, please see here (you may need to use the translation tool on your device or browser).

We know that teachers are concerned and interested in learning more about the new regulations. Despite what you may have read in the press, the bottom line is that we do not yet know if, how or when these regulations will impact the VIPKid platform. Most of the regulations pertain to "school curriculum-based tutoring,” which VIPKid does not provide. Additionally, regulatory changes like these often take months or even years to be implemented.

Our Government Relations team is working to understand timelines and exactly how these regulations may impact VIPKid, and we will share more information with you as soon as possible through the Teacher Portal and future Weekly Teacher Updates.

In the meantime, you can and should continue booking classes and meeting with students as normal - they are depending on you and cannot wait to see you in the classroom!

Thank you for your patience and continued support and we will be in touch with more information as soon as possible.
